Frank P. Brackett Papers 1826-1975

Dr. Frank Parkhurst Brackett was born in Provincetown, Mass. in 1865. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1887. Immediately after he graduated he moved to California. In 1887, he taught at the McPherron Academy for boys in Los Angeles. In 1889 he married Lucretia Burdick in Pomona, California. He taught astronomy, mathematics, and Latin at Pomona College from 1892 to 1932. In 1912, he took a sabbatical to travel to Algeria to conduct experiments on government funded research project. During World War I, he took another leave of absence from teaching to participate in the Commission in the Relief for Belgium. At the same time, during World War I, he worked closely with Captain A. W. Stevens in Los Angeles on the Selective Service Act of 1917. Brackett joined the R.O.T.C. and trained at Angel Island, in the San Francisco harbor, during the 1920s. From 1892 to 1932 Dr. Brackett, his colleagues and his students, as well as members of the community observed climatical, meteorological, and solar observations at the Brackett Observatory on the Pomona College campus for the United States Department of Agriculture, which later was renamed to the United States Department of Commerce, Weather Bureau.
